Alumni Spotlight Interview with Ariana Hoblin

--

I founded the SSI chapter at Florida Atlantic University in 2021. We were the first Florida chapter of SSI! I was the President from 2021–2023. Growing up, I experienced an insane amount of physical and verbal anti-Semitism. Ultimately, this pushed me to become active within the Jewish and pro-Israel community. When I got to FAU, I felt like there was not enough Israel education, and after talking with Ilan Sinelnikov (SSI’s national founder) during my senior year of High school, I thought SSI would be able to help me fix that issue.

Some of the most notable accomplishments of our chapter, besides being the first Florida Chapter, were being the hosting chapter for the SSI National Conference, organizing 170+ people to attend our Israel march after Oct 7th, and another 150 people to attend an Oct 7th Vigil.

I did internships in High school for Israel, but everything changed when I joined SSI. SSI taught me invaluable skills. I learned that we need to be proactive and not reactive on campus. I also became much more confident in my skills as an activist on campus. SSI pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible.

After graduation, I started working for the Zionist Organization of America as the Southeast Campus Coordinator. I did many fellowships and internships, but the skills I was taught from SSI were some of the most important. Because of SSI and the influence and support they gave me, I am able to help college students be pro-Israel on campus and help them create that type of environment.

For current students, remember that it is okay to feel awkward, judged, or even like you are failing at times. These feelings are part of the journey. But do not let them stop you from doing what you believe is right. Keep pushing forward because you never know what amazing things can happen when you persevere and stay true to your values. Your courage today can shape a better tomorrow.
